Fundação Terra Ecoa is being established in Brazil to hold land permanently outside the market — so that the communities who care for it can keep caring for it, across generations. A community that governs its own land can still be pressured to give it up — sold, mortgaged, foreclosed, conceded piece by piece. Terra Ecoa separates what is usually fused together, and takes the one thing that dissolves a commons off the table. The foundation belongs to no one — not its founders, not its board. Every member serves a purpose none of them owns. By statute, at least two seats are held by representatives of traditional and Indigenous communities. A fundação não pertence a ninguém — nem aos instituidores, nem ao conselho. Cada membro serve a um propósito que nenhum deles possui. Por exigência estatutária, ao menos dois assentos cabem a representantes de povos e comunidades tradicionais.
Communities and collectives tend the land day to day — planting, protecting, regenerating — under long-term stewardship agreements. They benefit from the land without ever holding the right to sell it. Once a territory enters the foundation, it cannot be sold, ceded, or pledged as collateral. Not by a future board, not under financial pressure, not ever. Guardianship, as a feeling, is common. As a tradition among the peoples of the forest, it is ancient. What is rare is guardianship held in a legal structure built to survive the pressures of this particular moment: speculative capital, generational discontinuity, and an accelerating ecological emergency. A commitment to protect a piece of land usually depends on whoever holds the title. When the title changes hands, the commitment evaporates. In Brazil, existing instruments protect the ecological attributes of a property while the property itself stays private, mortgageable, and tradeable. Terra Ecoa works on the other layer — and the two can be combined on the same ground. An RPPN, for instance, can be declared over land the foundation holds, joining the federal recognition of a private conservation unit to a title that can never be sold. No Brasil, os instrumentos existentes protegem perpetuamente os atributos ecológicos de um imóvel que segue privado, hipotecável e negociável. A Terra Ecoa atua na outra camada — e as duas podem somar-se sobre o mesmo território. In the western Brazilian Amazon, a territory of 16,480 hectares will be the first land placed under the foundation's guardianship. It is currently held by the guardian entity that tends it, and is committed to transfer to Terra Ecoa once its documentation is complete. In the town of Jordão, the foundation's base also hosts Ainbu Dayá, an Indigenous association working with Huni Kuin women. Está atualmente escriturado em nome da entidade guardiã que dele cuida, com compromisso de transferência à Terra Ecoa após a conclusão da documentação. Terra Ecoa is national in reach, seated in Brasília. Acre is where the model is being proven, not where it ends: the same architecture is built to hold land across the Cerrado, the Mata Atlântica, and any biome where a community is ready to guard a territory and needs that guardianship to last. More than half of Brazil's remaining native vegetation sits on private land. That is where a private vessel for perpetual guardianship can do work that public protection alone cannot.
